Active Girls Make Better Grades
Girls who spend more time in vigorous physical
activity may do better in school, even if they are not
particularly fit, study findings hint. Dr. Lydia
Kwak, at Karolinska Institute in Huddinge, Sweden, and
colleagues examined associations between light,
moderate, and vigorous physical activity and academic
achievement in 232 students (52 percent girls) who
were 16 years old on average and attending ninth grade
in a Swedish school. SOURCE: The Journal of
Pediatrics, December 2009.

Leadership
Skills Development
In two
ninety-minute sessions, Assistant Director Chris
Warner, will teach Flatirons athletes the essential
skills which are needed when serving in formal and
informal leadership roles. Athletes will learn about
the ideals of servant leadership and how to lead both
by example and by words through the analysis of self
and peer leadership skill evaluations. These are
important clinics for all Flatirons athletes (both
team captains and not) as these athletes will, most
likely, serve in leadership roles at some point in
their athletic and academic careers. The
leadership sessions are scheduled for Saturday,
January 23, 2010 from noon - 1:30 pm in the Eldorado
Cafetorium and Saturday, February 20, 2010 from noon -
1:30 pm also in the Eldorado Cafetorium. Sign up at

New to Club
Volleyball?
Club
volleyball is an opportunity for
volleyball players of varying abilities to
continue their development past the fall
school season. Hundreds of thousands of
boys and girls participate in Junior
Olympic “Club” volleyball sponsored by USA
Volleyball.
Junior Volleyball
players practice several hours a week in
small groups with one or two coaches. Club
coaches often have college playing
experience. Practicing in smaller groups
enables players to have more touches on
the ball. Repetitions are the best way to
improve skill level. The total number of
practice hours varies from club to club.
The fewest hours would be from 3 – 4 hours
a week. The most hours known for club
teams to practice is 17 hours per week.
Practice time combined with quality
practices are two of the most important
factors in determining whether or not to
play club volleyball.
The Club
season typically begins in October and can
run through the 4th of July. Open Gyms and
Tryouts are held in October/November.
Practices begin in November and the
competitive season starts in January. At
the younger age divisions (6th and 7th
graders), coaches look for athletic kids
who have an enthusiastic attitude. As the
girls get older, the more skilled players
are selected for club teams.
The
competitive season consists of 1 day or 3
day tournaments. The Rocky Mountain Region
(RMR) sponsors Power tournaments held on
Sundays at gyms all over the state of
Colorado and one in Wyoming. The
tournaments start at 8:00 am and finish
around 4:00 pm. Three day tournaments are
sponsored by the RMR and clubs. These
tournaments are also hosted all over the
state of Colorado. National Qualifier
Tournaments are held in several major
cities. You’ll find top teams from coast
to coast competing against each other. The
local National Qualifier Tournament is the
Colorado Crossroads Tournament held in
Denver. The winners of Crossroads qualify
to compete at the Junior Olympic
Championship Tournament scheduled at the
end of June.
Most clubs field
“National” or “Elite” teams that travel
out of state to compete in National
Qualifying Tournaments. Some of the host
cities are Minneapolis, Baltimore, Dallas,
Kansas City, Atlanta, Anaheim,
Indianapolis and Spokane.
As with
most competitive teams, equal training
time is guaranteed. Playing time is not.
Playing Club Volleyball is a
worthwhile expense. Club Volleyball is the
only true avenue to college volleyball.
The team experience is valued by college
admissions and employers alike. Girls are
taught to value the team over themselves,
to work with others even when the going
gets tough and to keep making an effort as
the process is the most valuable lesson of
all. Athletes also learn the importance of
physical and mental conditioning. In order
to be successful, female athletes must be
decisive and aggressive on the court. Some
say the best perk to playing on a
competitive club team is the long lasting
relationships that are formed. I believe
the life lessons are what make club
volleyball the incredible experience it
is.
